Overall, it was a delightful duology to read with a satisfying ending to the story. His conversations with his daughter and the love he had for his children were heartwarming. it was also a pity that the cast of characters changed quite a bit from before and after Ailong. The characters are well bult and compelling! We see more of the magical world. The Dragons Promise begins right where we left, when Shiori will accompany Seryu, the dragon prince, to find the rightful owner of the dragon pearl her dying mother in law gave her. Shiori and Takkan's relationship also matured and developed and it was really lovely to see them grow together. In my last review, I commented that the previous book had more of a rushed ending than I would have liked and, whilst things did move quickly, this book made much more of a point to wrap things up neatly and lead us to a satisfying ending. There was slightly more action here than in Six Crimson Cranes, with Shiori finding herself in many different places. I loved the dynamics and love Shiori had with these two characters. I loved how we got to learn more about everything. * I didnt realise how many threads are tied between the two series. All felt real, as if they were actual people who lived long ago. Lim runs a pretty concise masterclass of how to write an active protagonist. This book was everything I expected it to be - a heartwarming and beautiful story. I don't know what it is exactly, maybe it's the fairy tale vibes, the dragons, the magic, the reckless MC, or the fact that it's inspired in Asian folklore. It kept me on the edge of my seat (my heart wont fully recover I fear, youll be hearing from my cardiologist). Something that, once again, is empowering to see. I definitely hope this isn't the last we hear from the characters as I know she's had cameos before. The first act is pretty solid, which as I said is set in Ai'long. She must journey to the kingdom of dragons, navigate political intrigue among humans and dragons alike, fend off thieves who covet the pearl for themselves and will go to any lengths to get it, all the while cultivating the appearance of a perfect princess to dissuade those who would see her burned at the stake for the magic that runs in her blood. Pre Order the Dragons Promise Custom Stencilled Sprayed - Etsy - The synopsis is not fully honest, because it gives the impression that most of the novel happens in the dragon kingdom which in reality is only about 20% of the book, which I didnt dislike, but I feel like the main plot wasnt really clear at first, and the story kept pausing to explain what happened and what would happen now. Shiori will now return the broken pearl only to the dragon with the strength to make it whole once more. I had tears in my eyes when I finished the book. Check out these binge-worthy thrillers by Holly Jackson! I couldnt get enough of them. As much as Shiori may have magic coursing through her veins, the pearl is also imbued with malevolent power, helping the princess, but at the same time betraying her by threatening to destroy her family and her true love, Takkan. I love the banter between *coughs* Shiori and Seryu. Takkan. I'm happy to report this was everything I wanted and more !! The story was well-paced. Just love. This was wonderful! I love the main character, Shiori. Listed on Aug 25, 2022 After the events of "Six Crimson Cranes", Princess Shiori must undergo some challenges that will test her on everything she knows and loves, including going to the kingdom of dragons and facing off demons once again. She feels very real, strong and capable. From here, the plot forks out into multiple adventures: keeping the dragon pearl safe, finding the Wraith to return the pearl, and trapping the Wolf to truly prevent a demon uprising in Kiata. It cements the fact that what her main characters have done is extraordinary, and as such, there will be some sort of divine recognition. Either your welcome, or please don't slap me on my face for my stupidity and bad memory, I've already done it enough myself. Its so wholesome and warming, this series feels like a warm hug when you read it. Lim has created such a vibrant world with developed characters and stakes. I mentioned in my review of book 1 that hes a gem of a book boyfriend. It will help her endure frightening ordeals! Elizabeth Lim has gained a forever fan from this duology alone. Hey, Lizzie, so my cousin's bosses grandmas therapists chiropractors dentists dogs walkers friends boyfriends dead hamster knew you so that technically means I know you which technically makes us besties which means you need to give me this book for free right fucking now in honor to consolidate our totally 100% real friendship. The Kingdom of Kiata is vast and memorable. Shes such a strong female lead character. Princess Shiori now has the dragon pearl that was given to her by stepmother, Raikama. But also, I think it could have been shorter and added to the first to make a standalone. The second book picks up right where the first one left off, introducing the reader to the dragon realm. Picking up right where Six Crimson Cranes left off Shiori is bound to her promise to return the pearl to it's rightful owner and naturally it is more involved than she hoped for. It was an enjoyable read with familiar characters from book one and some new faces. Gorgeous covers aside, this . Her six brothers love and support fluttered my heart. At the end of the day, the reason why it's 5 stars is that this is a legit great book, and as the first book had something new and different about it, the Dragon's promise continued on that streak and made a proper, magical finish. From the New York Times Bestselling author of Six Crimson Cranes comes the thrilling next adventure!A journey to the kingdom of dragons, a star-crossed love, and a cursed pearl with the power to mend the world or break it. We follow Shiori as she keeps her promise to her stepmother, that she will return the pearl to its rightful owner. Character development in both books is so well done, but in the dragons promise, we the reader are given more insight into why the characters behave the way they do. Note: The Dragon's Promise is Book 2 of the Six Crimson Cranes duology. I loved how Lim let her characters be tempted by the cliches we're so used to (hiding the truth from significant others, sacrificing themselves completely needlessly, being generally idiotic because 'I care about you too much,') and then had them consciously realise that's dumb and move on to do better. A headstrong princesss promise to return a dragons pearl to its true owner leads her into many adventures. I will not dwell to much on the synopsis jsut in case. I was super excited to dive into The Dragons Promise because I really wanted more of Seiru! It only improves on the gorgeous storytelling and world building that were introduced to in Six Crimson Cranes. *dreamy sigh* One of the most perfect fictional specimens of mankind Ive ever come across (IMHO). I absolutely loved getting more backstory, I think that was my favourite part. I absolutely loved the first book, so I was really exited for this sequel, and it did not disappoint! Buy The Dragon's Promise by Elizabeth Lim from Waterstones today! Theres some tense moments, and heart-wrenching scenes and although theres not as many earth shattering plot twists as there was in Six Crimson Cranes, it still kept me on my toes, and it was interesting to see how the massive revelations in the first book developed and took on deeper meanings too. Something went wrong. I was instantly brought into an adventure. I absolutely loved this story as much as the first. Another amazing book from the phenomenal Elizabeth Lim. I think no matter which point of the story I was at, there was always some magical element, character, or environment that kept it all incredibly beautiful and poetic. It was a thrilling adventure Id often found myself on the edge of my seat, wondering how Shiori would save herself from trouble (bless her reckless act-now, think-later mentality!) Thank you Hodder & Stoughton for sending me this advanced reading copy through Netgalley! I also thought it came together in a very satisfying way. This book is amazing!! I love the author's character development for Shiori. I love how well developed they are. With the help of her friends, and some newfound ones, Shiori finds a way back to Kiata and her family, and more importantly, Takkan, so she can make plans to find the Wraith. She was far more vocal in this book and I loved it! Having spent most of the Six Crimson Cranes traversing her homeland, Shiori must enter the dragon realm and deal with the Dragon King, who is determined to get his claws on the peal at all cost. The Dragon's Promise follows Shiori into the dragon realm following her promise of bringing her stepmother's, Raikama, pearl to the dragon king. I loved the character growth and enjoyed all of the characters from the first book having their time to shine. It sounds so beautiful and colorful, I just need to see it. This may be my favorite in our collaboration, quite a feat since all of Tran's pieces have been breathtakingly beautiful -- but I especially love the fierce and determined expression she was able to capture in Shiori's face, and the dragons! For someone without siblings like me, this was really heartwarming and a sweet dream. I think this is why I would hesitate between 4 and 5 stars, because I also think that the tiny details that didn't work for me won't be a problem for a lot of people. I loved getting to know the brothers and Takkan better. The villain was once again depicted quite beautifully and I loved the easter eggs and the connection to The Blood of Stars duology! Cannot wait to see what she does next. But no matter how dark it gets, no matter how impossible everything may seem, theres always a little light to brighten the day. romance The author writes so elegantly and evocatively. She must travel to the Kingdom of Dragons to fulfill the request she was asked for. Elizabeth Lim was able to create a complete three hundred and sixty degree character and story. This book was action-packed, full of surprises and made me feel a lot of emotions. Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for an E-arc of this book. But nothing about the dragon realm is simple and returning the pearl may be only the beginning. I NEED MORE PLEASE! Kiki was also a firm favourite of mine, I think the sassy paper bird needs her own book. Kept me hooked til the very end and just look at the cover design how beautiful! An amazing sequel to an exquisite series! In this case, its a little paper crane. But her story is far from being over, as she must also make her way to the island of demons, luring the monster Bandur, a familiar enemy from Crimson, who is hellbent on bringing Shiori to her knees. /4.5 stars Shiori goes on one turbulent journey through this book, starting with the dragons and then the Holy Mountain then the journey to return the pearl and then back to the mountain - jeez! He had quite an air of patriarchal power in the first book, whereas in this one his strength is shown more through his love of his children and his openness to accept them for who they are.
